Marketing Your Podcast

In this episode, we delve into effective podcast marketing strategies, including understanding your audience, creating a marketing plan, leveraging social media, engaging with the community, and tracking your success to grow your listener base.

Today we're diving into one of the most crucial aspects of podcasting—marketing. Whether you're just starting out or looking to grow your audience, this episode will give you the tools you need to effectively market your podcast.

Understanding Your Audience

Successful marketing starts with understanding who your listeners are. What are their interests? What problems can your podcast solve for them? Use social media, listener surveys, and podcast analytics to get a clear picture of your audience demographics and preferences.

Creating a Marketing Plan

Outline your goals, identify the key platforms where your audience spends time, and decide on the marketing tactics you will use, such as social media promotion, email newsletters, or collaborations with other podcasters. Consistency in your message and branding across all platforms helps in building a recognizable and trusted brand.

Leveraging Social Media

Use platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to share interesting snippets from your episodes, upcoming guest teasers, and engaging visuals. Regular interaction with followers can convert them into loyal listeners. Consider using social media ads targeted at your ideal listener demographic to increase your podcast's reach.

Engaging with the Community

Encourage listeners to engage by asking questions at the end of each podcast, creating a Facebook group for listeners, or hosting live Q&A sessions. Partner with other podcasters or influencers who share a similar audience to cross-promote each other’s content.

Tracking Your Success

Use podcast hosting and social media analytics to track the effectiveness of your marketing efforts. Look at download trends, listener growth, and engagement rates to adjust your strategies accordingly.

Conclusion

With the right marketing strategies, you can significantly increase your podcast's visibility and listener base.

[00:00:00] Hey there. Craig Hewitt here from Kastos. Welcome back to our how to start a podcast series. Today we're going to be talking about how to market your show. So your podcast is live, it's doing great, you're creating amazing content, but you have to put in the work to effectively market your content and your show to your target audience. There is no, if I build it, they will come. This is not the field of dreams. You got to do the work. So how does this work? How do you go about promoting your show? So I'll give you the very simple answer. And it is social media. Social media is by far the best way to promote your podcast. And I know a lot of us don't love social media. I am active in social media, but I don't love it. But it is very good at achieving one thing, which is giving you an opportunity to get your message in front of a new audience.

[00:00:52] Other marketing modalities, like publishing to your website or sending an email newsletter or things like that, are really great at connecting with existing members of your audience. But if we're talking about growing our audience size, to me it's all about putting it out on a platform that has an algorithm that is designed to put that in front of people who might like it. That's Facebook, that's LinkedIn, that's Twitter, that's Instagram, right? All the popular social media platforms. And I'll give you an asterisk here, because YouTube is a bit of a content platform, and it's a bit of a social media platform, right. It has a feed, it has suggested you can search, right, all the kind of aspects of a search engine, but it also keeps giving you more content over and over and over. And if you have kids like mine, they'll spend hours on YouTube every day. It is a lot like a social media platform. It's designed to keep you there. So YouTube, a really amazing platform. If I had to say, like, do one thing really well, it would be do really well on YouTube. As far as growing your audience, I've heard statistics that new shows starting these days, if they're doing it well, YouTube is half of their listenership. So don't sleep on YouTube. But just in general, I would strongly encourage you to pick one social media channel and really focus on that. Create assets and content and presence on that one channel. Sure, you can publish to Instagram and TikTok and all these other places, too. But if LinkedIn is your place, or if Twitter is your place, focus there and create the content that you think people on Instagram or on TikTok or on Twitter would like and consider the rest of it is just like, kind of gravy, right? If I'm creating these short video clips or these tweets or whatever, they're, they're meant for this platform. But I can also have them go over here as well and just kind of say, hey, they probably won't perform as well as they will for the one that they're intended for. Okay, so that is podcast audience growth using social media. In the next video, we're going to talk about how to track the performance of your show with analytics.
